1181529 - How to determine what files are updated or created after installing an application, upgrade, or update

Symptom

How can you find out what files are updated when you upgrade an application or what files are installed as part of a new installation? For example, you receive notification that a service pack is available and you want to install it. But after installing, you want to track exactly what was installed/updated as not all applications log their installs.
