1196801 - Error: "CMS host: < Server Name > cannot be found on the network. Please verify the name and that network name resolution is working properly.” when attempting to connect to the server from Crystal Reports

Symptom

  • Unable to connect to the server from Crystal Reports.
  • Error: "CMS host: < Host Server Name > cannot be found on the network..."
  • When attempting to logon to the server from Crystal Reports, it fails with the error:

"CMS host: ‘jccacmtstrpt01’ cannot be found on the network.
Please verify the name and that network name resolution is working properly."

Environment

  • SAP Crystal Reports 2013
  • SAP Crystal Reports 2016
  • SAP Crystal Reports 2020

  • SAP BusinessObjects Business Intelligence platform 4.1
  • SAP BusinessObjects Business Intelligence platform 4.2
  • SAP BusinessObjects Business Intelligence platform 4.3

Reproducing the Issue

  1. Start Crystal Reports.
  2. Under the menu "File", select "Open"
  3. In the "Open" window, in the left pane, select "Enterprise"
  4. Enter the SAP BusinessObjects BI server name, user name, and password.
  5. It then fails with the error:  "CMS host: <Server Name> cannot be found on the network."

Cause

  • Networking issue where the SAP BusinessObjects Business Intelligence platform server host name, cannot be resolved on the network.

Resolution

  • Contact your Network Administrator to obtain the IP Address of the SAP BusinessObjects BI Server IP Address, and add it to the  MS Windows Host file on the local computer where Crystal Reports is installed.

    1. In MS Windows, navigate to the following path:

           C:\WINDOWS\System32\drivers\etc\

    2. Open the 'hosts' file in a text editor, and add the host name and IP Address like:

<IP Address of the SAP BusinessObjects BI Host Server>    <SAP BusinessObjects BI Server Host Name>

      For example:
If the server name is: ABC-12345, and the IP Address is: 10.123.456.789 , then add at the following line to the Host file:

           10.123.456.789 ABC-12345

    3. Save the change.

  • If after performing the above, it still fails despite you added the correct IP Address to the Host file, then it indicates the users does not have read or execute permissions on the hosts file. When you check the security permissions on the hosts file, you will see the "Users" is not in the list. In which case:

    1. Add the Domain\Users group to the list of the hosts file security permissions
    2. Assign it with Read and Read & Execute rights on the hosts file.
