1198955 - UTF-8 data from a MySQL database on UNIX/ Linux appears as question marks (??)

Symptom

When displaying UTF-8 data from a MySQL database on a UNIX/Linux deployment, the viewer shows question mark characters (??) in place of UTF-8 characters.
When opening the report with Crystal Reports on Windows with a MySQL database, it works correctly.
