1213015 - How to convert a report from a database driver to a Universal Data Link (*.udl) file

Symptom

How do I convert a report from a database driver to a Universal Data Link (*.udl) file?

Cause

A UDL file is an OLE DB connection. A report can be converted from either an ODBC or native connection to a UDL file connection.

Resolution

Here are the steps:
  1. Click Set Datasource Location on the Database menu.
  2. Click the data source to be changed in the Current Data Source section.
  3. Click OLE DB (ADO) > Use Data Link File in the Replace With section.
  4. Click the UDL filename > Open > Next. Provide the appropriate logon credentials.
  5. Click Next to provide any advanced connection information (for example, time-out parameters) if necessary. Otherwise, click Finish.
  6. Click each table in the Current Data Source and its replacement in the Replace With section.
  7. Click Update. Close the Set Datasource Location window.
The report now points to the new location. It is recommended to verify the report.

IMPORTANT: Click each table in the data source individually. If the data source is a stored procedure, the individual tables will not appear.

In Crystal Reports 10 and Crystal Reports XI, if mapping from a data source such as a stored procedure where the report designer can not determine which fields should be mapped automatically, the Mapping dialog box appears. Here it is possible to manually map fields as in the procedure cited above.
