1218668 - Positive numbers appear as negatives when for report exported to Microsoft Excel from Crystal Reports

Symptom

  • Negative number, displays as positive number.
  • Number Sign is reversed, after exporting a report from Crystal Report to MS Excel format.
  • In Crystal Reports, when a number field in a report is formatted with the option 'Reverse Sign for Display', and the report is exported to MS Excel, the negative numbers in the database are changed to positive number in Crystal Reports, but then display as negative in the Excel spreadsheet.

Environment

  • Crystal Reports 9
  • Crystal Reports 10
  • Crystal Reports XI

Reproducing the Issue

  1. In Crystal Reports, create a report off any data source.
  2. Insert a numeric database field on the report that contains both negative and positive values.
  3. Format the numeric field with the option: 'Reverse Sign for Display':
    • Right-click on the numeric field then click 'Format Field'.
    • On the 'Number' tab, click the 'Customize' button.
    • Select the 'Reverse Sign for Display' check box.
  4. The numeric value sign is now reversed on the report.
  5. Export the report to MS Excel format.
  6. Notice in MS Excel that the negative values are now visually positive, and the positive values negatives.

Cause

  • This is a known issue that have been tracked under ADAPT00338484.

Resolution

  • The issue is resolved in the latest product updates of:
    • Crystal Reports 9
    • Crystal Reports 10
    • Crystal Reports XI

  • Now, when exporting the report to MS Excel format, and formatting a numeric field with: "Reverse Sign for Display", it will display the numeric value the same way it appears in Crystal Reports. But note that this option is for displaying purposes only, and the actual value in Crystal Reports, and in MS Excel is still going to be the opposite of what it displayed. This is normal behavior, since the option is for displaying purposes only.

  • Note: You do not need to apply any update for the following version, because it works as expected in those versions:
    • Crystal Reports XI R2
    • Crystal Reports 2008
    • SAP Crystal Reports 2011
    • SAP Crystal Reports 2013
    • SAP Crystal Reports 2016
