1218669 - Err Msg: "List of Values failure: fail to get values..." in Crystal Reports XI

In Crystal Reports XI, when refreshing a report that uses a parameter with a dynamic and cascading prompt, the following error message appears:

"List of Values failure: fail to get values.[Cause of error: Type mismatch] prompt.dll Error code 0x8004380D"

Why does this error message appear and how do you resolve it?

This error message appears because in this scenario there are three levels of parameter, but the middle level parameter only contains null values.

For example, assume that you create a dynamic cascading parameter that uses the country, region and city fields. If you use a country that has no region values and only contains null values, this error message appears. Alternatively, if the country field has only null values, the error message also appears.

To resolve this error message, ensure that every parameter level contains a value.

This behavior is by design because using a field with all null values is not supported with dynamic and cascading prompts.
