  • In Crystal Reports, or in Business View Manager, when trying to save an object to the Repository, like a Picture, a Custom Function, a Data Connection, a Data Foundation, a Business View... it generates the error:

"Operation failed: You do not have edit right on: <Object Name> or <Folder Name>"
  • Cannot save a newly created Crystal Reports to the repository. Get a failure with the message - Internal Error: The Report Application Server Failed.

Environment

  • SAP Crystal Reports 2011
  • SAP Crystal Reports 2013
  • SAP Crystal Reports 2016
  • SAP Crystal Reports 2020

  • SAP BusinessObjects Business Intelligence platform 4.0
  • SAP BusinessObjects Business Intelligence platform 4.1
  • SAP BusinessObjects Business Intelligence platform 4.2
  • SAP BusinessObjects Business Intelligence platform 4.3

Reproducing the Issue

  1. In the Business View Manager, or in Crystal Reports, logon to the Repository.
  2. Create, or edit an object, like: a Picture, a Custom Function, a Data Connection, a Data Foundation, a Business View...
  3. When attempting to save the object to the Repository, it fails with the error:

"Operation failed: You do not have edit right on: <Object Name> or <Folder Name>"

Cause

  • The user does not have the rights to: Edit, View and Set Security, on the object, folder, or parent folder of the Repository.

Resolution

  • To save any of the following objects to the Repository:
    - Picture
    - Command Object
    - Custom Function
    - Text Object
    - Data Connection
    - Data Foundation
    - Business Element
    - Business View
    - List if Values

The user must have all of the following rights Granted on the folder and objects:
    - View
    - Edit
    - Set Security

  • Rights are edited in the Business View Manager:

    1. In  the Business View Manager, logon to the Repository using a user with the Administrator rights.

    2. In the Repository Explorer pane, usually located on the right side, navigate to the folder where the user tried to save the object.

    3. Right click on the folder, and select "Edit Rights..."

    4. Grant all of the following rights for the user or group:
      - View
      - Edit
      - Set Security

Important Note: The error often occur because the right: Set Security, is not Granted. It often occurs because it is required for this right to be Granted to be able to save and edit an object in the Repository, but it is not obvious from the name of the right.

    5. Also, ensure the Everyone group have all of the following rights granted:
      - View
      - Edit
      - Set Security

This is required, because if any of the the right is Denied for the Everyone group, it will also be denied for all the users, including the Administrator.

    6. Click "OK" to accept the change.

    7. Repeat the steps above for the root folder, as well as specific object, because all objects have rights.
