1300601 - Error: 'Failed to open connection. Update of the SQL command from the universe failed.', when refreshing a report based off a Universe in Crystal Reports

Symptom

  • Error: 'Failed to open the connection.'
  • Report created in Crystal Reports based off a Universe, fails with the error:

      "Failed to open the connection.
Details: Update of the SQL command from the universe failed.
This report cannot be refreshed unless the SQL command is updated from the Universe."

  • Report used to work before, but started failing recently.

Environment

  • SAP Crystal Reports 2011
  • SAP Crystal Reports 2013
  • SAP Crystal Reports 2016

  • SAP BusinessObjects Business Intelligence Platform 4.0
  • SAP BusinessObjects Business Intelligence Platform 4.1
  • SAP BusinessObjects Business Intelligence Platform 4.2

Reproducing the Issue

  1. In Crystal Reports, create a report off a Universe.
  2. Save the report.
  3. Later, open the saved report in Crystal Reports designer, and refresh it.

    It fails with the error:

      "Failed to open the connection.
Details: Update of the SQL command from the universe failed.
This report cannot be refreshed unless the SQL command is updated from the Universe."

Cause

  • One of the reason for this error to occur, it's if the Universe has been deleted from the Filestore Input folder. Since the Universe not longer exist, it fails.

Resolution

  • To verify if the Universe on which the report is based exist on the SAP BusinessObjects Business Intelligence Platform, follow the steps below:

    1. Check for the Universe File in the existing Input\Output store folder on the SAP BusinessObjects BI Server:

      The path is: C:\Program Files (x86)\SAP BusinessObjects\SAP BusinessObjects Enterprise XI 4.0\File Store\Input

    2. If the Universe file is not present then, find a backup copy of the Universe, and reload it to your SAP BI Platform Server.

If the Universe exist, then the issue might be because the Universe has a different CUID. For more information, see the SAP Knowledge Base Article 1757228
