1408404 - Excel varchar data type converting to numerics only

Symptom

I am creating a dataflow that uses an excel workbook as a source and the first column in the workbook is defined as a varchar(30). This column is defined as varchar(30) in subsequent query and template table. When the first value in column are numeric only numeric values are read from Excel, alpha-numeric values are nullified. If the first value in column is alpha-numeric then column is properly read as varchar.
