1429772 - Cannot view BPC Launch Page in Load Balanced Environment

Symptom

  • An end user enters the following url into their browser: https://sapbpp/osoftThe client browser performs a SSL (port 443) connection to a F5 load balancer where the SSL connection is terminated and then forwards all requests on the VIP – sapbpp to two application server installed with the SAP BPC application listening on port 80 (regular HTTP).
  • The F5 load balancer is configured for session persistence based on the client IP address and browser session. When the SAP BPC application web server receives the request for <Error! Hyperlink reference not valid. from the F5> load balancer, it attempts to render a file called osoft, which does not exist on the application web server.
  • As a result, the web server determines that there is a directory called osoft and issues a http redirect header back to the client browser to indicate that the browser should redirect the request to http://sapbpp/osoft/ since the SAP BPC application is not aware of the SSL requirement which was terminated at the F5.  The resulting redirect has dropped the SSL port requirement and the client browser cannot connect to the SAP BPC application since the F5 is not accepting connections on port 80 (regular HTTP) for the VIP – sapbpp.
  • Additionally this is not a desired response since the SSL encryption will be lost at this point. If the end user enters the following url into their browser: https://sapbpp/osoft/The SAP BPC application correctly responds to the request, since the trailing slash of the url indicates that a directory on the SAP BPC application web server should be accessed to determine the default page to render.
