Symptom

Unable to start Tomcat on port 80 in Unix environments

Environment

Tomcat 5.5

Reproducing the Issue

Change the port number in server.xml file from 8080 to 80 and start tomcat server.

Cause

All ports <1024 are "privileged" ports and only root user can access these ports in Unix environment.

Resolution

Refer the link to run Tomcat on port 80.
