Symptom
How to display the Parameter’s description on Report Header?
Environment
- Crystal Reports XI R2 (All Patch levels)
- Crystal Reports 2008 (All Patch levels)
Reproducing the Issue
- Create a Crystal Report against the Xtreme Sample Database
- Create a Parameter (Field Explorer -> Right Click Parameter Fields ->New)
- Create a Dynamic or a Static Parameter by choosing ‘Customer.Customer ID’ in the ‘Value’ field and ‘Customer .Customer Name’ in the ‘Description’ field
- Click OK and drag the Parameter onto the ‘Report Header’ section
- Observe that the when the report is refreshed, it does not display the Parameter’s description and there is no option to display it as well
Resolution
- Insert a Subreport ( Insert -> Subreport) and place it beside the Parameter on the ‘Report Header’
- During the creation of the Subreport make sure you add the same Database tables which are in the Main report using the ‘Report Wizard’
- Right click the Subreport and click on ‘Change Subreport links’
- Move the Parameter which was created to the ‘Field(s) to link to’ section
- Check on the ‘Select data in Subreport based on field:’ checkbox and select ‘Customer.Customer ID’ from the drop-down and click ‘OK’
- Right click the Subreport and click ‘Edit Subreport’
- Suppress all other sections except ‘Report Header a’ and drag the ‘Customer Name’ field onto this section
- Refresh the report and select the Parameter value; the report will show the Customer ID with its description i.e. Customer Name beside it
