1543317 - How to return the description of a static parameter instead of its value when displayed in Crystal Reports 2008.

Symptom

The static parameter should return the description instead of its value in Crystal Reports.

Environment

Crystal Reports 2008.

Reproducing the Issue

  1. Launch Crystal Reports designer.
  2. Create a new Crystal Report.
  3. Go to File menu.
  4. Click on Options.
  5. In Options window, go to Database tab.
  6. Under Table and Fields, click on the radio button of Show Description.
  7. Create a new Parameter. To create a new Parameter, in Field Explorer right click on Parameter Fields and click on New.
  8. Click on Value Field, drop down to select any field.
  9. Observe that the fields are displayed by Name and not by Description.

Cause

It is the default behavior of the product.

Instead of displaying the description, the static parameter displayes the values in Crystal Reports.

Resolution

  1. Right click on the parameter field and click on Format Field.
  2. A Format Editor window will open up.
  3. Go to Common tab.
  4. Click on the symbol (x+2) in front of Display String.
  5. A Formula Workshop window will open up.
  6. Select the field from which the description comes instead of the parameter field.
