1543803 - Business Objects Registry Key and Its Child Objects missing under HKEY_CURRENT_USER

Symptom

  • "HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Business Objects" Registry Key and its Child Objects are missing for some users
  • "HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Business Objects" Registry Key and its Child Objects are present

Environment

  • Crystal Reports 2008
  • Windows Server 2003

Reproducing the Issue

  1. Log on to Windows Server 2003 Machine as Administrator
  2. Install Crystal Reports 2008
  3. After Installing Crystal Reports, Create a new Local User on Machine with User name "Test"
  4. Log Off as Administrator
  5. Login as Test User
  6. Go to Start and Run regedit
  7. Expand "HKEY_CURRENT_USER\SOFTWARE" Key
  8. "HKEY_CURRENT_USER\SOFTWARE\Business Objects" Registry Key and Its Child Objects would be missing

Cause

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Business Objects and its Child Objects are created only for the Users that are present at the time of installation of Crystal Reports.

For the User which are created after the Installation of Crystal Reports, Registry Entries are created only after launching Crystal Reports Designer for the first time

Resolution

  1. Log in to the machine as User "Test" 
  2. Launch Crystal Report Designer
  3. When Crystal Reports Designer will be launched for the first time, A window with name "Copying" will popup with message "Please wait while user-specific files are configured"
  4. After Crystal Reports Designer opens up, Run regedit and expand "HKEY_CURRENT_USER\SOFTWARE"
  5. "HKEY_CURRENT_USER\SOFTWARE\Business Objects" registry key and its child objects will be generated
