1663705 - Crystal Reports hangs on start up

Symptom

  • Crystal Reports hangs.
  • Crystal Reports is not responding when starting up.
  • When opening Crystal Reports, it hangs for 10 to 15 minutes.

Environment

  • SAP Crystal Reports 2008
  • SAP Crystal Reports 2011
  • SAP Crystal Reports 2013

Reproducing the Issue

  1. Open Crystal Reports.
  2. It hangs for 10 to 15 minutes.

Cause

  • If the option: "Check for Updates on Start Up" is checked, Crystal Reports is trying to connect to SAP server to check for updates.
  • If the server is down or unresponsive, it may take between 10 to 15 minutes before you can use Crystal Reports as it is looking for the server.

Resolution

  • To avoid waiting when starting up Crystal Reports, disable the check for product update option:

    1. Open Crystal Reports.

    2. Wait for 10 to 15 minutes.

    3. Under the menu "Help", uncheck the option: "Check for Updates on Start Up".

Now, when starting Crystal Reports again, it will no longer check for the product updates on startup. It is possible to check for product updates manually by selecting the option "Check for Updates" under the menu "Help" when desired.

  • Another option is to disabled checking for update by setting the registry key: DisableOnStartUp, to the value: 1

WARNING - The following resolution involves editing the Registry. Using the MS Registry Editor incorrectly can cause serious problems. Use the MS Registry Editor at your own risk. It is strongly recommended that you make a backup copy of the registry before editing it. For more information, refer to the SAP Knowledge Base Article 1323322

    1. Open the Microsoft Windows Registry Editor.  ( regedit )

    2. Navigate to the path corresponding to the version of Crystal Reports you are using:

      • For Crystal Reports 2008:
        • HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Business Objects\Suite 12.0\Crystal Reports\CheckForUpdates

      • For Crystal Reports 2011, 2013:
        • HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\SAP BusinessObjects\Suite XI 4.0\Crystal Reports\CheckForUpdates

      • Note: If the product is installed on a 64bit version of Microsoft Windows, the path will be different as the 32bit software registry keys will be under: Wow6432Node. For example, for Crystal Reports 2011 installed on a 64bit operating system, the registry path will be:

        HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Wow6432Node\SAP BusinessObjects\Suite XI 4.0\Crystal Reports

    3. Create a new "DWORD" entry called: DisableOnStartUp

    4. Set DisableOnStartUpto the value: 1

    5. Now, when starting Crystal Reports, it will no longer check for updates.
