1679017 - Exporting to PDF format a report that contains on-demand subreport causes Crystal Reports to close

Symptom

  • Crystal Reports terminate unexpectedly.
  • Exporting a report to PDF format causes Crystal Reports to close.
  • When exporting a report to PDF format that contains on-demand subreport that are very small, Crystal Reports terminate unexpectedly.

Environment

  • Crystal Reports XI R2
  • Crystal Reports 2008
  • Crystal Reports 2011
  • Crystal Reports for Visual Studio 2010

Reproducing the Issue

  1. Create a report in Crystal Reports from any data source, and add at least one database field in the details section.
  2. Insert a subreport in any section of the report. 
  3. Set the subreport to be On-demand:
    • Right click on the subreport, and select: Format Subreport
    • In the Format Editor, under the tab: Subreport, check the option: On-demand Subreport
    • Click on  the button: OK, to accept the change
  4. Resize the subreport to be very small. ( Smallest possible )
  5. Save your report.
  6. Export the report to PDF format.
        
    Notice Crystal Reports will not export your report, and terminate unexpectedly

Cause

  • The issue has been identified and logged under Problem Report ID ADAPT01590658
  • The issue occurs when the on-demand subreport name is longer than the size of the subreport defined on the report design.

Resolution

  • The issue is resolved in Service Pack 5 for SAP Crystal Reports, developer version for Microsoft Visual Studio.
  • The issue is planned to be resolved in Service Pack 6 of Crystal Reports 2008.
  • To workaround the issue, resize the subreport to be larger, so the subreport title fully displays on the report.
