Environment

  • SAP Crystal Reports for Enterprise 4.0
  • SAP Crystal Reports for Enterprise 4.1
  • SAP Crystal Reports for Enterprise 4.2
  • SAP Crystal Reports for Enterprise 4.3

Reproducing the Issue

  1. In Crystal Reports for Enterprise, open a report.
  2. Upon opening, it generates the error: 'This report does not use a Common Semantic Layer data source'

Cause

  • There are 2 different versions of Crystal Reports:
    • Crystal Reports
    • Crystal Reports for Enterprise

  • Both product uses different technolgies to connect to data sources, and this error will occur when a report created in Crystal Reports for Enterprise was open in Crystal Reports, and saved, then re-opened in Crystal Reports for Enterprise.

  • To verify the above:

    1. Open the same report in Crystal Reports.

    2. Under the menu "Database", select: "Set Datasource location"

    3. In the "Set Datasource location" window, expend the connection Properties. If it shows "crdb_" at the beginning of the Database DLL, like:

          crdb_v12_dsl_driver.dll

It means the report was saved in Crystal Reports 2011, 2013, 2016 or 2020, and a warning message was ignored.
Normal report created based on a Universe in Crystal Reports for Enterprise will display the Database DLL as:

          V12_DSL_DRIVER

Resolution

  • To be able to refresh the report in Crystal Reports for Enterprise, set the datasource location. This will reset the database connection and driver used to connect to the data source.

    1. Open the report in Crystal Reports for Enterprise.
    2. Under the menu "Database", select "Set Datasource Location"
    3. Point the report to the correct datasource.
    4. Save the report.
