1700285 - Cache refresh fails with error: begin of unexpected element "script"!

Symptom

The mapping runtime cache refresh (Delta and Full) fails with the following error:

409   Conflict
SAP NetWeaver Application Server

Error: Method fault! Message : IBaseException:Parsing generic data instance: begin of unexpected element "script"!
com.sap.aii.ib.core.abapcache.CacheRefreshException: Parsing generic data instance: begin of unexpected element "script"!

Also in SXI_CACHE transaction this error is displayed:

Unable to refresh cache contents

Error during last attempt to refresh cache

INTERNAL_ERROR HTTP response does not contain a valid XML root tag

In RWB the Cache Connectivity Test shows this message:

Attempt to fetch cache data from Integration Directory not yet started or still in process
