1728742 - Drill-down not working when viewing a report in Crystal Reports Viewer or Crystal Reports for Enterprise

Symptom

  • Drill-down not working.
  • Nothing happen when double clicking on a group to drill-down. 
  • In Crystal Reports, when double clicking on a group, it drill-down on the group. When viewing the same report in Crystal Reports Viewer, or in Crystal Reports for Enterprise, and double clicking on a group, nothing happen.

Reproducing the Issue

  1. In Crystal Reports create a report on any data source.
  2. Insert at least one database fields in the details section.
  3. Create one group
  4. Suppress, or Conditionally suppress the Details section of the report.
  5. When viewing the report in Crystal Reports, and double clicking on the group, it drill-down on that group.
  6. When viewing the same report in Crystal Reports Viewer or Crystal Reports for Enterprise, and double clicking on a group, nothing happen, when we expect to be able to drill-down.

Cause

  • It is not possible to drill-down because the section is not formatted to drill-down. The section is either suppressed or conditionally suppressed, which doesn't allow drill-down.

  • As you can see from the above Section Expert window, it is only possible to drill-down if the section option: Hide (Drill-Down OK) is selected, and not when the option selected is: Suppress ( No Drill-Down ).
        
  • In Crystal Reports it allows user to drill-down on a suppress or conditionally suppress section, but it was an issue that has been resolved in Crystal Reports Viewer, and in Crystal Reports for Enterprise. This is why the drill-down behavior is different in Crystal Reports versus Crystal Reports Viewer, and Crystal Reports for Enterprise.

Resolution

  • To drill-down on a section in Crystal Reports Viewer, or in Crystal Reports for Enterprise:

    1. Right click on the section, and in the contextual menu, select: Isolate Information
        
    2. It will drill-down on the group.
         
         
          
  • To be able to drill-down by double clicking on a section, modify the report, and check the section option: Hide (Drill-Down OK)

    1. Open the report in Crystal Reports
       
    2. Under the menu Report, select Section Expert
       
    3. In the Section Expert window, for the section that are suppress or conditionally suppress that you want to be able to drill-down on, check the option:  Hide (Drill-Down OK)
        
    4. Click the button OK to accept the change.
         
    5. Save the report.

Now, when viewing the report in Crystal Reports Viewer, or Crystal Reports for Enterprise, it will be possible to drill-down by double clicking on the section as the section is now set to drill-down.
