1729500 - JAVA system error randomly occurrs in Event Data Change in process chain due to locked objects

Symptom

An Event Data Change in process chain fails with the error message:
Java system error: Exception in method processFunction.

In the default trace, you find the following entries:

ERROR MC (601): Object requested is currently locked by user <user name>
  MSGV1: <user name>
  MSGV2: E_RSRREPDIR
ABEND BRAIN (635): Query XXXX could not be opened.
  MSGV1: <query name>
