Symptom

A Dashboard model is based off XML data from a website. 

How do I configure Excel XML Maps as the data source?

Resolution

Configuring Excel XML Maps

Obtain the XML from the web.

  1. Close the Xcelsius application.
  2. Open the xml web page in a browser.
  3. Save as xml. 
  4. Close browser.

Add XML to Excel spreadsheet

  1. Open Excel
  2. Click on the “Data” tab in Excel
  3. Click on “From Other Sources” dropdown arrow and select “From XML Data Import”
  4. Navigate to the downloaded xml file and select open.
  5. Import data to a single cell in the Excel sheet.
  6. Save as XLSX file
  7. Exit Excel.

Import the spreadsheet data

  1. Open the Dashboard Design tool (Xcelsius)
  2. Click on DATA tab and select “Import”
  3. Navigate to and select the xlsx file that was saved.

Add the connection

  1. Click on the DATA tab and select Connections.
  2. Click ADD and select Excel XML Map.
  3. Wait for the connection to be populated.
  4. Click on the connection and supply the URL.
  5. Set any Usage settings as required.
  6. Click Close

Add components and map to cells needed in the spreadsheet area.

Notes:

Xcelsius is not a reporting tool.  It is best to use the product for final summary charts etc.
