1762827 - "Startup of Instance Service failed" in UNIX or Linux environment

Symptom

When starting the SAP system with the startsap command in UNIX or Linux environment, the following error might appear:

  1. startsap returns with:

    Checking <SID> Database
    Database is running
    -------------------------------------------
    Starting Startup Agent sapstartsrv
    FAIL: Timeout
    Startup of Instance Service failed
    See /home/<sid>adm/startsap_DVEBMGS<NR>.log for details
     
     
  2. When checking the /home/<sid>adm/startsap_DVEBMGS<NR>.log file, it contains:

    Called command: /usr/sap/<SID>/SYS/exe/run/startsap start
    -------------------------------------------
    05:42:22
    Starting Startup Agent sapstartsrv
    -------------------------------------------
    05:44:22
    Startup of Instance Service failed
    -------------------------------------------
    05:44:22
    See /home/<sid>adm/startsap_DVEBMGS<NR>.log for details
     
     
  3. And checking the /home/<sid>adm/startsap.trc file, it contains:

    /usr/sap/<SID>/SYS/exe/run/sapstartsrv pf=/usr/sap/<SID>/SYS/profile/<start or instance profile> -D
    ask sapcontrol when service is started
    /usr/sap/<SID>/SYS/exe/run/sapcontrol -nr <NR> -function
    WaitforServiceStarted 120 10
    Startup of Instance Service failed
    See /home/<sid>adm/startsap_DVEBMGS<NR>.log for details
