1776210 - Analysis for Office prompts for username and password even it is saved in the CMS repository

Symptom

After specifying Username and Password in the Information Design tool for a BW OLAP connection and saving the connection to the repository, Analysis for Office still prompts for Username and Password to BW after selecting this connection from the BI repository.

Environment

  • SAP BusinessObjects Business Intelligence 4.0
  • Analysis for Office 1.2.9.1776 - Patch 09

Cause

Current methods of refreshing reports based on SAP system (BW, ECC) and versions they can be used in

  1. Hard coded username and password in connection (CR, webi, olap, universe, xcelsius, etc) – XI 3.1 and BI 4
  2. SAP secondary credentials (SAP user logged in and user/pw are cached in CMS DB) - XI 3.1 and BI 4
  3. SNC (SAP alias attached to account allows refresh without password via SNC server trust) - XI 3.1 and BI 4
  4. STS (SAP alias attached to account allows refresh without password via STS certificate) BI 4 new applications only - Analysis for Office

Analysis for Office builds it's own RFC connection to BW and doesn't go via the "IDT connection", hence it cannot re-use the preset username and password saved in the CMS repository and will prompt for it.

Note: If Analysis for Office doesn't prompt there might be some sort of SSO happening in the background.

Resolution

Manual login has to be provided or STS needs to be setup. Using STS, Analysis for Office can use the ticket to login to BW.
