1777626 - Cannot save transaction AO90 despite implementation of SAP Note 589102 (Error Message AC301)

Symptom

Re-setting the G/L account mapping to pre-upgrade settings results in hard error AC301 (Account &3-&1 is not a balance sheet account) and/or AC302 (Account &3-&1 not allowed to be a P&L account), even though SAP Note 589102 has been implemented. Current settings for certain accounts cannot be overridden in transaction AO90 due to the hard error.
