1778816 - Cannot Open a Report with Microsoft Excel

Symptom

You are not able to view or edit a report from SAP Business ByDesign with Microsoft Excel 2010 or 2013.

Reproducing the Issue

  1. Navigate to the required work center.
  2. Click Reports view.
  3. Select a report.
  4. Click Edit With and then Microsoft Excel.
  5. Internet Explorer prompts you to Open or Save the file. Click Open.
  6. Microsoft Excel will be opened.
  7. The following messages are displayed:
    Protected View
    Starting SAP report...
    SAP Add-In for Microsoft Excel Troubleshooting Guide
    Install SAP Add-In for Microsoft Excel from Download Center

 or

  1. Navigate to Business Analytics work center.
  2. Click Design Reports view.
  3. Select a report.
  4. Click Edit With and then Microsoft Excel.
  5. Internet Explorer prompts you to Open or Save the file. Click Open.
  6. Microsoft Excel will be opened.
  7. The same messages above are displayed.

Cause

To help protect your computer, files from Internet and from other potentially unsafe locations are opened in Protected View.

Resolution

Resolution 1 (Disabling Protected View):

  1. Open MS Excel.
  2. Go to File; Options.
  3. When Excel Options dialog comes up, click on Trust Center and then on Trust Center Settings.
  4. Select Protected View.
  5. Uncheck Enable Protected View for files originating from the Internet and Enable Protected View for files located in potentially unsafe locations.

Resolution 2 (Without Disabling Protected View):

  1. Leave the Protected View settings unchanged.
  2. When Internet Explorer prompts you to Open or Save the file, click Save as rather than Open and then save the file into a safe location, e.g. in the Desktop.
  3. Open the spreadsheet from this safe folder.
  4. Navigate to SAP Cloud for Customer tab and then log on to the system.
  5. You will be able to open the report without changing Protected View setting.

or

  1. Leave the Protected View settings unchanged.
  2. When Internet Explorer prompts you to Open or Save the file, click Open.
  3. When being informed about the Protected view on the Message Bar, click Enable Editing.
  4. Navigate to SAP Cloud for Customer tab and then log on to the system.
  5. Choose the Insert Report button.
  6. In the pop up select the desired report.
  7. You will be able to open the report without changing Protected View setting.
