1780484 - HANA upgrade fails with 'ERR: Cannot open install registry'

Symptom

While attempting to upgrade SAP HANA database you face an upgrade error message such as this:

yourhost:/path/to/installation/media# ./hdbupd

[...]
ERR: Upgrade failed
ERR: Error checking Upgrade
ERR: software installation defect
ERR: Cannot initialize install registry
ERR: Cannot open install registry
ERR: File "/<path to install config directory>/INSTREG" is no valid InstallRegistry
[...]
