1843997 - Blank lines appear between data when exporting a report to Text format from Crystal Reports

Symptom

  • Empty lines.
  • Blank lines appears between data in the text file.
  • When exporting a report to Text formt from Crystal Reports, the output generates new lines between the data.

Environment

  • SAP Crystal Reports 2016
  • SAP Crystal Reports 2020
  • SAP Crystal Reports 2025

Reproducing the Issue

  1. In Crystal Reports, create a report off any data source, and add database fields to the details section.
  2. Export the report to Text format, and set the character per inch to: 60
  3. When opening the exported report in a text application, notice there is new lines between the data.
     
    For example: If the report have the following 3 records.
      
       Hockey       Chicago
       Baseball      New York
       Football       London

    When the report is export to Text format, and open in a text application, it displays the following:

       Hockey       Chicago
      
       Baseball      New York
     
       Football       London
       
    Notice there is blank line between each row of data.

Cause

  • This situation occurs when each row of data contains a large number of characters, and the 'Character per inch' setting generates new lines between the data.

Resolution

  • To avoid generating blank lines when exporting a report to Text format that have details that contains large amount of text, set the registry key: Force255TWIPLineHeight, to the value:
           
    WARNING
    The following resolution involves editing the Microsoft Registry. Using the MS Registry Editor incorrectly can cause serious problems. Use the MS Registry Editor at your own risk. For more information see the SAP Knowledge Base Article 1323322 
              
    1. Close Crystal Reports designer.
             
    2. Open the Microsoft Registry Editor. 
      1. In MS windows, select "Run" under the menu "Start"
      2. Type: regedit
               
    3. In the MS Registry Editor, navigate to the path corresponding to the version of Crystal Reports used:
         
      • HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\SAP BusinessObjects\Suite XI 4.0\Crystal Reports\Export\Text
          
      • Important Notes:
        - If the last part of the path does not exist, simply add the missing keys.
        - If you are using a 64bit Edition of MS Windows, the registry path will start with: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Wow6432Node    
           
    4. Under Text, add the DWORD Value: Force255TWIPLineHeight, and set the value to: 1
            
      1. Right click on the CSV key, and select "New - DWORD Value"
      2. Set the DWORD Value to: Force255TWIPLineHeight
      3. Set the value to: 1
                    
         
  • On the SAP BusinessObjects Business Intelligence Platform, you can also add the following registry keys, and set the value to: 1
    • SuppressAllBlankLines
    • SuppressTrailingNewlines
    • Force255TWIPLineHeight
