1903067 - BICS Connections to SAP BW are not released after some Scheduling workflows for Web Intelligence

Symptom

  • Connections that use BICS connectivity to an SAP BW system remain open on the Adaptive Processing Server (DSL Bridge) during some schedule workflows.
  • This issue can cause a variety of symptoms.  The most obvious symptom is that multiple connections to the SAP BW server will be held open by the Adaptive Processing Servers (APS) that host the DSL Bridge Service.
  • In the below screenshot, using Process Explorer, we show what the connections may look like when monitoring the APS TCP/IP Connections

  • As these connections add up, they can cause secondary symptoms.  Below are some of the known issues this can cause.
    • "An error has occurred.  The Maximum connection limit has been reached. (Error:  RWI 00000)" In the Schedule/Prompts dialog.
      • This could also occur in other areas of the product as well but the root cause may be these connections that are left open during the schedule workflow

  • "An error has occurred.  java.lang.NullPointerException" in the Schedule/Prompts dialog
    • This happened during testing internally and may be another symptom of this issue

  • "max no of connections (<max_conn>) exceeded" - SAP Note 887909
  • "max no of cpic clients exceeded (<max_sys>) exceeded"  - SAP Note 894100

Note: The BW connection remains open until the default session timeout is reached on the Web Intelligence Processing Server
