Symptom

The following error is raised when trying to start the XP server associated with the Adaptive Server Enterprise (ASE) server:

Kernel XP Server failed to start. Check if there is an entry for XP Server in sysservers table.

On the screen you see:

1> xp_cmdshell 'who'
2> go
Msg 11018, Level 16, State 1:
Server 'My_SYB_ASE', Procedure 'xp_cmdshell', Line 8:
XP Server must be up for ESP to execute.
