1921354 - RC=28: No space left on device error, Startup of HANA database with IBM GPFS filesystem fails

Symptom

Startup of HANA nameserver or indexserver fails with error message:

[36016]{0}[0] 2013-09-08 04:35:03.899358 e FileIO
LocalFileCallback.cpp(00270) : ERROR in async. file transfer:
exception  1: no.2000008
(Basis/IO/FileAccess/impl/LocalFileCallback.cpp:264)
    Error during asynchronous file transfer, rc=28: No space left on device

although Linux OS command disk free ('df -h') shows enough free space for the particular mountpoint:
