Symptom

  • When inserting data thorugh a (third-party) application
    • For example
      • ETL tool
      • Business Objects

  • ASE returns error 2402:
    Error converting characters into server's character set. Some character(s) could not be converted.

  • When using Adaptive Server Enterprise (ASE) as a backend to BOBJ BI Data Services, the following error is returned:

    Cannot save <attribute list> for repository object <date_created> additional database information … error message for operation
    <ct_results>: <Sybase ASE server message number <2402> state <11> severity <16> from server <SERVER_NAME>:
    message text is:
    error     converting characters into server’s character set. Some character(s) could not be converted.>>
