1928484 - How to configure the application pool identity for Crystal Reports in a web application?

Symptom

  • Incorrectly configured application pool identity will lead to a number of issues
  • These may include 500 errors, viewer not displaying, load report errors and more

Environment

  • SAP Crystal Reports, developer version for Microsoft Visual Studio
  • Crystal Reports 2008
  • Microsoft Visual Studio (2010, 2012, 2008, 2005)

Resolution

  • The application pool identity should be set to an account which has read / write access to the rpt files location, images location, CRViewer folder location and file export location
  • The account under which the IIS is running should also have the permissions to above locations
  • The %TEMP% folder also needs read / write permissions
  • To troubleshoot issues related to permissions use the Process Monitor utility and search the logs for "Access Denied" messages
