Symptom

  • Running command "ALTER TABLE " or "CREATE TABLE" generates warning:

Potential offset of column '<columnname>' (<nnnn> bytes) and subsequent variable-length columns in table <tablename> exceeds limit of 8191 bytes
for column-offset of variable-length columns in DOL tables. Future inserts to this table may fail.

  •  Message 4982 may also be reported:

 Msg 4981, Level 20, State 1
 Column offset, 9008 bytes, for variable-length column number 2 exceeds the maximum start offset for variable-length columns in DOL
 tables (8191 bytes). The lock scheme for the object 't1' was not changed.
