1966245 - reorg rebuild fails with errors 156, 11050 and/or 11934 on SAP ASE for Business Suite

Symptom

  • You are running Sybase ASE
  • Your table or column name is 'merge' or 'MERGE'
  • You are running the SQL command 'reorg rebuild'
  • You see that 'reorg rebuild' fails
  • Upon failure you may see errors 156, 11050 and 11934 raised

    • If the column name is 'merge' or 'MERGE' you will receive errors similar to following

Beginning REORG REBUILD of table '<table with column "merge" or "MERGE">'.

Msg 156, Level 15, State 2:
Server '<servername or SID>', Line 1:
Incorrect syntax near the keyword 'MERGE INTO'.

Msg 11050, Level 16, State 3:
Server '<servername or SID>', Line 1:
Adaptive Server cannot process this ALTER TABLE statement due to one or more preceding errors.
If there are no preceding errors, please contact Sybase Technical Support.

Msg 11934, Level 16, State 1:
Server '<servername or SID>', Line 3:
REORG REBUILD of table '<table>' failed due to an internal error. Please contact SYBASE Technical Support.

    • If the table name is 'merge' or 'MERGE', you will receive errors similar to this:

Beginning REORG REBUILD of table 'merge'.

Msg 156, Level 15, State 2:
Server '<servername or SID>', Line 1:
Incorrect syntax near the keyword 'merge partition'.

Msg 11934, Level 16, State 1:
Server '<servername or SID>', Line 1:
REORG REBUILD of table 'merge' failed due to an internal error. Please contact SYBASE Technical Support.
