1968354 - No SchemaDefinitions available for AdapterType

Symptom

You try to change the adapter metadata version belonging to an adapter in a channel's configuration. After selecting a metadata version, you click 'Apply', and the following error is seen:

          Could not parse Channel <channel_name>(ObjectId:<object_id>) 
          AdapterType: <Type of Adapter> http://sap.com/xi/XI/System 
          com.sap.aii.af.service.cpa.CPAException: Schema not available
          for <Type of Adapter> at com.sap.aii.af.service.cpa.impl.cache.directory.DirectoryDataSAXHan
          ...
         Caused by: com.sap.aii.af.service.cpa.impl.exception.CPASchemaException:
         No SchemaDefinitions available for AdapterType:
         <Type of Adapter> <VersionID of Adapter Metadata> http://sap.com/xi/XI/System
