1981016 - Error 11203 "The command 'UPDATE' is not legal for objects of this type" - SAP ASE

Symptom

A query reports following error:

Msg 11203, Level 16, State 18:
Server 'xxxxxx', Line 1:
The command 'UPDATE' is not legal for objects of this type. External definition: <file name>
Command has been aborted.
This error can occur even when the target of the update is not the external table.
