Symptom

  • A query accessing large XML files fails with ASE error 712:

There is insufficient heap memory to allocate <value> bytes. Please increase configuration parameter 'heap memory per user' or try again when there is less activity on the system.

  • A corrupt (very large and/or negative) error number is returned:

02:0008:00000:08508:2013/11/22 14:48:41.44 server Error: -1397969760, Severity: 538976288, State: 538976288

  • A stack trace accompanies the corrupt error

  • Query using XMLTABLE() function
  • Failed query is executed multiple times concurrently
