1999042 - Managed System Configuration: Introscope Host Adapter ended with java.lang.NullPointerException

Symptom

During the Managed System Configuration the activity Introscope Host Adapter fails with error:

Failed to configure Introscope HostAdapter Agent for SMDAGENTHOSTNAME
!! Exception : java.lang.NullPointerException
    Exception
 java.lang.NullPointerException
at com.sap.sup.admin.wily.hostagent.config.Utils.rehashJCoDestinations(Utils.java:210)

Moreover, the SMDAgentApplication.log of the affected SMDAgent shows the following error:

Mar 27, 2014 8:10:30 PM [Thread[Reconnect,5,WILYHOST_SCHEDULER:Exec...] Error      com.sap.smd.wily.hostagent.destination.JCODestination - init(): Initilization of PS2|<smdagenthost>_SOL_00 failed.
[EXCEPTION] com.sap.mw.jco.JCO$Exception: (101) RFC_ERROR_PROGRAM: Parameter backend host ('ashost') is missing
