2009001 - Server down with error sddone: No space left on device and Errors 823, 694 - SAP ASE

Symptom

  • ASE becomes unresponsive
  • With errorlog reporting messages indicating file system space issues:

sddone: write error on virtual disk 4 block 12345:
sddone: No space left on device

  • A variety of further messages may be seen immediately or some time after
  • These can include error 823, 69x and other errors:

Error: 823, Severity: 24, State: 2
I/O error detected during wait for BUF ... 

Error: 694, Severity: 24, State: 10
An attempt was made to read logical page '123', virtpage '4567' from virtual device '0' for database 'master' (1), object 'syslogins' (33), index 'syslogins' (0), partition 'syslogins_33' (33).
The page was not read successfully. You may have a device problem or an operating system problem.

Warning: The internal timer is not progressing.
If this message is generated multiple times, report to Sybase Technical Support and restart the server (alarminterval=-98765432).

  • These errors may be repeated filling the log, since each I/O request will throw an error.
