2014105 - Many connections in MAINTENANCE TOKEN - SAP ASE

Symptom

  • The number of user connections is (rapidly) increasing
    • This can continue until ASE runs out of user connections and raises error 1601:

      Error: 1601, Severity: 17, State: 3
There are not enough 'user connections' available to start a new process. Retry when there are fewer active users, or ask your System Administrator to reconfigure ASE with more user connections.

    • Or ASE can report connections are terminated

Process 'xxx' has been terminated because it exceeded the maximum login time allowed. This process used a temporary administrative connection which is allowed a maximum login period of '15' minutes.

  • Output from sysprocesses or sp_who shows many processes in "MAINTENANCE TOKEN" / "recv sleep" state

spid   suid   status          cmd                                     hostname    hostprocess    ipaddr
    ------  ------  ---------------  -----------------------------------  ---------------  ------------------  ----------------
123   456   recv sleep   MAINTENANCE TOKEN    NULL          NULL             10.xx.xxx.xxx
  • Running dbcc stacktrace on the spid may include conn_hdlr, usrfill and upsleepgeneric:

    kpsuspend
    upsleepgeneric
    usrfill
    conn_hdlr
    kpstartproc
    kpinitproc
