2019858 - Error: "VAL-030157: Expressions in an ORDER BY clause are not supported; only columns are. Fix the expression" - Data Services

Symptom

  • Job Fails to Odd Error.
  • Same dataset runs sometimes and fails others with this error.
  • Error is intermittent.
  • Several group bys in the dataflow.
  • Complex dataflow with many tables joined and group by with aggregates.
  • Error:  "VAL-030157: Expressions in an ORDER BY clause are not supported; only columns are. Fix the expression <expression>"
  • Expression contains a data services "generated" column name meaning the group by is running on the data services engine.
  • Can see if you go to Validation > Display Optimized SQL that this particular Group By is not pushed down to the database.
  • The dataflow is running in memory.
