A web tier deployment separates static and dynamic web application content so that static content is served by a web server, and dynamic content is served by a web application server. The web and web application servers could run on the same machine, or separate machines connected to a network.

Environment
SAP BusinessObjects Business Intelligence (BI) Platform supports the following combinations of web server and web application server:
- Apache with Tomcat
- Apache with Oracle Weblogic
- IBM HTTP Server (IHS) with WebSphere
For the specific version information of web server and web application server supported by a certain BI Platform 4.x service pack, please refer to the corresponding SP's Web Application Deployment Guide. Please refer to KBA 1323216 on how to find the BI Platform product guides.
At the time when this article was written, the latest version of BI Platform (4.1 SP3) supports the following:
- Apache 2.2 web server with Tomcat 6 or 7
- Apache 2.2 web server with WebLogic 10.3.x
- IBM IHS web server 7 with WebSphere 7.0
- IBM IHS web server 8.5 with WebSphere 8.5 or 8.5.5
