2056252 - select count(*) returns an inaccurate or negative value on very large tables - SAP ASE for BS

Symptom

While checking the total row count on very large tables, the resultant values is incorrect.

select count(*) from <table>  ==> where <table> contains more than 2 billion rows

This query returns a negative value or a bogus, very high, inaccurate value.
