2072673 - Backup Server reports "Too many open files" or Open Server Error: 16110.10.0 - SAP ASE

Symptom

  • Running on ASE 15.7 SP130
  • Issuing a dump or load
  • Backup Server errorlog reports errors including to "Too many open files" or "Open Server Error: 16110.10.0"

SYBMULTBUF ERROR: Failed to open database info file /tmp/DB_BACKUP01. System message= Too many open files
SYBMULTBUF ERROR: Fatal Error: Database emulator failed while executing command 161.
The 'fopen' call failed for database/archive device while working on stripe device '/path/to/stripe' with error number 24 (Too many open files).
SYBMULTBUF ERROR: Emulator interprocess communication failed with error state = 18, error code=32, system message=Broken pipe.

or

Open Server Error: 16110.10.0: srv_select() was called with a bad select mask (no fds set) parameter.
Backup Server Internal Error: 4.62.3.5: Multibuffering subprocesses died, archive /path/to/stripe
Backup Server: 4.128.2.1: Failed to start multibuffering subprocesses for archive device /path/to/stripe
SYBMULTBUF ERROR: Emulator interprocess communication failed with error state = 16, error code=32, system message=Broken pipe.
SYBMULTBUF ERROR: Emulator interprocess communication failed with error state = 9, error code=0, system message=Pipe I/O returned 0 bytes.
