Symptom

The semicolon character (:) gets converted to the caret character (^) when used in a Cost Center object

Display name displays a special character

Upon selection of the cost centre from the picker, the Display name is copied to the field. The semicolon gets converted to caret and upon saving the document, it again gets converted to semicolon. It's happening only for the semicolon character.
