2080126 - How do Employment Information > Hire Date and Original Start Date fields work? - Employee Central

Symptom

The Original Start Date field is designed to store the employee’s very first hire date.

  • During a hire action (via Add New Employee, Manage Pending Hires, or Manage Inactive Employee wizards), the field Original Start Date under Employment Information is automatically populated with the Effective Start Date of the first Hire record.
  • This value comes from the Hire Date field.
  • If the employee is later terminated and rehired, the Hire Date field under Employment Details will update to reflect the latest Hire record’s Effective Start Date (e.g., the Rehire record), but the Original Start Date continues to show the first hire date.

Environment

SAP SuccessFactors Employee Central

Resolution

  • The Original Start Date is populated by the Effective Start Date of the first Job Info Hire record (Hire event).
  • The system automatically corrects this value if the first Job Info Hire record is re-imported or if the hire date is changed using the Hire Date Correction Tool (when Hire Date and Original Start Date have the same value).
  • You can also update the Original Start Date via:
    • Employment Details import, or
    • Edit Employment UI.

Important Notes:

  • When you Rehire an Inactive employee with New Employment, a new user ID is created. The Original Start Date for this new employment will be the Effective Start Date of the new Hire record, not the previous employment's Original Start Date.
  • If you need to store a historical "Original Hire Date" that is not tied to a Job Info Hire record (e.g., when loading data only from a cut-over date without full job history), you must use a custom date field instead. The delivered Original Start Date field is controlled by system logic and will always align with the first Job Info Hire record’s Effective Start Date.
