Symptom
- If a customer wants to use the Manage Business Configuration UI (BCUI) for the Succession Data Model (SDM), then they must reach out to an Implementation Partner to enable this feature as they should have the required access to Provisioning (the backend). This is because it is an Opt-In feature. The customer will require help and should be sent the correct documentation before getting started.
- BCUI for the SDM is a powerful Admin tool allowing administrators to maintain certain elements of the SDM using their end-user UI, instead of asking SuccessFactors staff to maintain these elements in the XML configuration files.
- The BCUI is helpful if you are a customer that would like to be able to make your own configuration choices and changes. You will find the BCUI useful if you are a customer that makes frequent use cases such as changing labels, changing the display sequence of fields, adding or changing translations, changing the visibility of fields, making fields required, country/region-specific fields and also adding custom fields.
- This KB article explains how to enable the Manage Business Configuration UI (BCUI) and things a customer needs to be aware of and should carefully consider before they start using it.

- Search for Enable Generic Objects and enable it.
- Search for Enable Business Configuration in Admin Tools and enable it.
- Click Save.
- The steps can be found on the help guide: Prerequisites to Using Business Configuration UI
- Product Support will enable this feature in your Test instance first as you will need to become very familiar with using the tool before making any Production changes
- Please use Admin Guide Setting Up and Using Business Configuration UI (BCUI) which contains details into what to consider as you start using the tool
- Once you have been informed the feature is enabled, you will need to follow the step in Setting Up Role-Based Permissions for Business Configuration UI to set up the Role-Based permissions
- Go to permission role select per mission - Manage Business Configuration - tick all box
- To open BCUI go to Admin Center > Company Settings > Manage Business Configuration or just type Manage Business Configuration in the Search Box
- Now you are ready to start to use Manage Business Configuration.
IMPORTANT:
- Please be fully aware you are changing your configuration when using the BCUI tool. There is possibility you can cause undesired behavior and problems on your system if you do not take care, exercise control and demonstrate caution
- It is recommended you become thoroughly familiar with using this tool in your Test instance before asking Product Support to enable this in your Production instance.
Note: Once the tool is enabled in Production, always make any changes the Test instance first and ensure the changes are thoroughly tested and signed off by your business prior to making the same alterations in Production. When you do make the change in Production make sure an immediate test is made there by key users
- Keeping a log of your changes is highly recommended. Screen shot your settings in the BCUI before you make a change and use this as a reference should you need to troubleshoot or roll back. If you are subsequently not in the office then a colleague can see what has been changed in your absence and can follow up. Also you can use this change log as a reference and source when working with Customer Success on any resulting query or question after changes were made
- Be aware when making changes to fields controlled by permissions, you may need to enable and review the field Manage Permission Roles before the changes becomes visible
Caution: If you are disabling standard elements in a productive system might have adverse effects on your instance. These elements are no longer available in the application and the standard element is also removed from the XML file when downloaded. This is a high risk change and you should consider the consequences in your case carefully. Take care when disabling!
