You receive a shortdump (Transaction Code ST22) as follows when running background DSO Activations...

Runtime Errors        SYSTEM_CANCELED

Termination occurred in the ABAP program "GP**********" - in "PROCESS_BUFFER_TABLES".                                                                    
The main program was "RSBATCH_EXECUTE_PROZESS "

And/Or 

In the BW monitor (Transaction RSMON) you can see errors as follows:

• Resource error. No batch process available. Process terminated
