2095654 - Error: "Failed to open connection" when refreshing a report using dynamic parameters in Crystal Reports

Symptom

  • Failed to open the connection.
  • Crystal Reports is prompting to logon to database when refreshing a report with dynamic parameter, then fails with the error:  "Failed to open Connection"

Environment

  • SAP Crystal Reports 2013
  • SAP Crystal Reports 2016
  • SAP Crystal Reports 2020

Reproducing the Issue

  1. In Crystal Reports, open a report using dynamic parameters.
  2. Refresh the report.
  3. When prompting for the database logon, enter a valid database user name and password.
  4. It then fails with the error: "Failed to open the connection."

Cause

  • Data Access rights are not granted to the SAP BusinessObjects user for the relevant Data Connection used by the dynamic parameter List of Values (LOV)

Resolution

  • Inthe Business View Manager, grant Data Access rights on the Data Connection used by the List of Values associated with the dynamic parameter :
    1. In Business View Manager find the relevant Data Connection for the List of Values used by the dynamic parameter.
      • 1.1  Select the LOV in Repository Explorer window and click the "Show relevancy”
               button at the top-right corner of the Repository Explorer window,
      • 1.2  It will show all the relevant objects including the Data Connection used by the List of Values.
             
    2. Right-click the Data Connection in Repository Explorer Window and select Edit rights.
        
    3. Click Preview button in the upper right corner of the dialog.
        
    4. Notice the Data Access is unchecked and Denied for the User or User Group.
        
    5. Explicitly grant the Data access to all required Groups.
        
    6. Restart Crystal Reports.
