2107660 - Error 632 or memory corruption with stacktrace when accessing text/image data - SAP ASE

Symptom

  • The ASE server is upgraded, probably recently, from a pre-15.7 release (12.5.x, 15.0.x or 15.5) to a 15.7 or 16.0 release.
     
  • After the ASE upgrade, attempts to access text/image column data fail with any of a variety of the following symptoms:
     
    • Error 632 when accessing text/image column data is the most common symptom encountered under these conditions:

Error: 632, Severity: 20, State: 2
Attempt to move memory with an incorrect length of 28580. Maximum allowed length is 16384.

    • Error "Current process infected with Signal 11" (or Signal 10) with a stack trace that includes routines sendtext() and may include txcomp__getplaintxt() or txcomp__cleanup().

    • Other Signal 11 (or Signal 10) with stack traces may occur indicating memory corruption due to earlier memory corruption failures.

    • The ASE server may crash reporting a memory corruption stack trace with a SPINLOCK violation.

    • BCP OUT of data from a user table with text/image column(s) may hang.

    • Error 7173:

Error: 7173, Severity: 18, State: 6
server Internal error while decompressing the text value on page 622, dbid 1, error code 4 (TX_ZLIB_DAT_ERR).
Please contact Sybase Technical Support.

    • Msg 12918 when executing DBCC CHECKTABLE or CHECKDB against table(s) containing text/image columns.

Msg 12918, Level 16, State 2:
Flags (0x48b) in Text/Image/Unitext Page Status Area on text page 8388935 (partition id 592005140) does not match the attribute of text page
chain starting from page 8331274. Run DBCC REBUILD_TEXT to fix it.

    • Msg 100030, hard fault 'page format error,'  in the DBCC CHECKSTORAGE output indicating a page with text/image data.

  • Other processes may subsequently encounter a variety of other problems due to memory corruption that may occur during item 2 above.
